However, when we trace back the origin of the fables that are the starting point of Spanish literature we find there the unmistakable flavor of so many Sanskrit tales used throughout time to entertain and educate. In this conference we will present the links between Calila e Dimna, the first example of Spanish prose, with two classical works from Sanskrit literature: Pañcatantra and Hitopadesha. Wendy J. Phillips-Rodríguez obtained her BA (Hons) in Spanish at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), her MLitt in Sanskrit Studies at the University of Edinburgh and her PhD in Sanskrit at the University of Cambridge. Her PhD dissertation was awarded the DK Award to the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis on Sanskrit by the International Association of Sanskrit Studies (IASS) at the 14th World Sanskrit Conference (Kyoto, Japan).Currently, she is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Philological Research and an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature of the UNAM. Mumbai, 29th December 2011: The Tourism Authority of Thailand, Mumbai has announced the launch ofits online travel trade training & certification program. Theambitious program will aim to train and certify 1,500 tour operators and agentson a pan India basis over 12 calendar months beginning January 2012.

Commenting onthe planned launch, Mr. Sethaphan Buddhani, Director, Tourism Authority ofThailand said, "The program has been branded as the ‘Amazing Thailand Champion Agents’ and would enable travel agents& tour operators to familiarize themselves with various wonders of Thailandsuch as heritage, culture, cuisine in addition to other aspects suchas wellness, adventure and leisure opportunities for their clients. We willalso highlight various destinations within Thailand that will provide anopportunity to further increase the length of stay and quality ofexperience."

Mr. Buddhanifurther added, "Earlier on ground training programs initiated by ouroffices in New Delhi and Mumbai had met with a high level of intrigue andsubscription from front liners and senior management of travel agents and touroperators. In order to further expand the opportunity to all regions of Indiaand widen the base of knowledge of agents promoting Amazing Thailand, it wasdecided to take the program online with specific modules designed especiallyfor the Indian market."

During thecourse of the training, enrolled members will also appear for anonline test on the various offerings and destinations in Thailand. Agentssecuring the highest scores would also be offered an opportunity of aneducational tour to Thailand and experience the destination first hand.Incentivizing early registrations, the TAT office has announced limited 'earlybird' gift hampers.

To avail ofthis opportunity, trade members in India would need to log on to www.thaitravelmart.com and register their company.Upon registering, they would then need to proceed to the E-learning section andin particular ‘Lesson 3’ which has been specially designed for the Indianmarket.

The onlinetraining or e-learning program has been divided into 4 modules for the Indianmarket. These modules include General information, Seven Wonders of AmazingThailand, Destinations and Special Information. Travel agents and touroperators are required to study these four modules and appear for an onlinetest for each module. Upon successfully completing all four modules, the travelagent will be certified as an ‘Amazing Thailand Champion Agent’.

Grievance Redressal Mechanism for Students and Applicants for Admission in Higher Educational Institutions. Shri Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for Human Resource Development stated today that there would now be a Grievance Redressal mechanisms in higher educational institutions. UGC, AICTE and NCTE would be requiring all Central Educational Institutions, institutions deemed to be universities, technical and management institutions under AICTE and teacher education institutions under NCTE to establish a Grievance Redressal Mechanism for Students and applicants for admission before the commencement of the admission this academic year. Every institution would be required to constitute an Ombudsman; person with judicial or legal experience to be appointed from a panel suggested by the affiliating university for technical and management institutions, by the Central Government for deemed universities and by the regulator for non-degree granting institutions. The concerned regulators would issue the detailed instructions to the educational institutions shortly.

There are several grievances that arise relating to students and applicants for admission in higher educational institutions. These grievances require prompt redressal in order to provide timely succor to aggrieved students and applicants. The Parliamentary Standing Committee, while examining the Bill to prohibit and punish unfair practices, had recommended that pro-active steps be taken to constitute Grievance Redressal mechanisms in higher education institution.

Applicants for admission and students can apply to the Ombudsman for redressal of grievances and the Ombudsman shall deliver his/her order within one month. Although the order would not be binding on the institution, the regulator would rely on the frequency of non-observance to decide on continued recognition to such institutions.

The Ombudsman shall have the jurisdiction to hear grievances concerning denial of admission, non-observance of declared merit in admission, non-observance of applicable regulations for reservation, with-holding of documents and non refund of fees in case of withdrawal of admission, discrimination and other such matters concerning students in pursuit of studies in the institution. In case of matters concerning weaker sections such as SCs/STs/OBCs or minorities, the Ombudsman can co-opt a person of eminence from the area coming from the weaker section to assist him/her in arriving at a decision.

Indians rescued in Italy cruise mishap-

Hundred thirty Indians were rescued on lifeboats after a luxury cruise liner ran aground off the Tuscan coast in Italy. At least five people died and 17 remained unaccounted for. None of them are Indian. Divers are trying to find more survivors.

The luxury cruise liner was carrying more than 4,200 people, many of whom were having dinner at the restaurant when it hit a reef or rock near the Tuscan island.

External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna has asked Indian Ambassador to Italy to reach the accident site and to coordinate the rescue operations. Two Indian officials have already reached the site.

In an interview with SportzPower’s Javed Farooqui, Raja says 2011 has been a year of learning for the federation.we have understood what are our strength and capabilities. It has also been an eye opener from the point of view that with the introduction of World Series of Boxing by Aiba, the old style of boxing has come back into play which is more of hard punches, body movements. Boxing has become a different game altogether and if we have to be in the reckoning for the Olympics, World Championships etc we have to develop this (old style boxing) part of it so that our boxers are strong who have the courage, endurance and the hitting power. In the past 15-20 years the Aiba has brought so many rules which were more suited for ‘touch-and-go’ or the points system. The actual boxing which the likes of Muhammad Ali played was more of attacking. To bring back the beauty of the game, Aiba has brought back the scoring system. So this has been the biggest learning for us and maybe Aiba will also permit us to conduct the same (Boxing Series) for selection of people and that will help our boxers also they will become much stronger.

Other than that our juniors, youth and women boxers have also done well, four of our boxers have already qualified for the Olympics and there is one more Olympic qualifier coming up for mens' section and subsequently the womens' section. What is emerging is that it is the age of youngsters now like in the mens' section we have Vikas (Krishnan), Devendro (Singh), and now Shiva Thapa, who have done well. Similarly in the womens' section we have young girls who won during the World Championships like this girl called Sarju Bala, who is a Gold medallist in world championship. So in the next two-three months we will know whether the women in the senior section are able to maintain their position or these (Junior) girls will overtake them.

Malaysian oppo leader Anwar acquitted in sodomy trial

Malaysian High Court on Monday has acquitted opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy charges by his former aide after a two-year trial, a verdict likely to strengthen his alliance ahead of the general elections.

High Court Judge Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah on Monday took just three minutes to deliver his most awaited judgment to a packed court house and found him not guilty of sodomising his former aide 26-year-old Mohd Saiful Bukhari.

The Judge said there were no collaborating evidence to support Saiful's testimony, citing unreliable DNA evidence.

"The court cannot be 100 per cent certain that DNA was not contaminated," the judge said. "And because it was a sexual offence, the court is reluctant to convict on uncorroborated evidence," he said. However, there is no written judgment.

A crowd of 64-year-old Anwar's supporters shouted "Allahu Akbar," or "God is great" after the judge finished reading the verdict.

Anwar immediately hugged his children who were crying over the verdict. He also shook hands with the prosecutors.

"Thank God justice has prevailed," a jubilant Anwar said. "I have been vindicated. To be honest, I am a little surprised... My focus now will be at the coming elections."

The verdict comes ahead of elections due in 2013 but widely expected to be called later this year.

The allegations against Anwar surfaced just months after elections in 2008, in which he led the opposition to unprecedented gains at the expense of the ruling coalition.

The trial has riveted Malaysia and sparked charges of a government set-up to cripple the Anwar-led opposition. It is the second sodomy verdict in a dozen years for Anwar.

However, Information Minister Rais Yatim said in a statement that the acquittal "proves that the government does not hold sway over judges' decisions."

"Malaysia has an independent judiciary," Rais said.

"The current wave of bold democratic reforms introduced by Prime Minister Najib Razak will help extend this transparency to all areas of Malaysian life."

Hundreds of police and security personnel were deployed on the streets and outside the court ahead of the verdict. Hours before the verdict, thousands of Anwar's supporters assembled near the Jalan Duta court, awaiting the verdict.

They carried banners saying "free Anwar" and shouted slogans denouncing the trial, with some chanting "reformasi" (reform), the battle cry of Anwar supporters after his spectacular ousting as deputy prime minister in the late 1990s.

Anwar, who served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1993 to 1998, was sentenced to six years in prison for corruption in 1999 and to another nine years for sodomy in 2000.

In 2004, the Federal Court reversed the second conviction and he was released. Sodomy is illegal in this Muslim country though few are ever prosecuted.

Mohd Saiful, who accused Anwar of sodomy, tweeted that he remains calm over the verdict that dismissed his charge.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur police chief said officials were investigating an explosion at a car park about 400 metre from court complex. The bomb squad and forensics team were at the scene.

The 15^th World Sanskrit Conference (WSC), organized by Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi in association with International Association of Sanskrit Studies, will be inaugurated by Honorable Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on 5^th January 2012 at 10 a.m. Honorable Minister of Human Resource Development Shri Kapil Sibal will be the Guest of Honour in the Inaugural Session. Soon after the inaugural session, Dr. Ashok Aklujkar and Dr. Lokesh Chandra will deliver special lectures, which will be chaired by Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan.
On the 4^th January 2012, pūrvaraṅga, a programme to mark the beginnings of the 15^th World Sanskrit Conference will be organized. Dr. Ramakanta Goswami, Minister for Industries, Labour and Election will inaugurate the Sanskrit Book Fair, and Shri Chinmay R. Garekhan, Chairman, IGNCA will inaugurate the series of exhibitions in the premises of IGNCA.

A five-day festival of Sanskrit theatre will be organized by the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan during the Conference. Sanskrit plays as performed in traditional theatres of Kūṭiyāṭṭam, Katha-kali, Nāṅgiyār Kuttu, Yakṣagānam, Ankiyā Nāt and Manipuri Rāsa will be staged as under:

GOPIO-BENGALURU CHAPTER INAUGURATED

The Bengalurue chapter of the Global Organisation of the People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) was inaugurated by Justice Gopala Gowda, Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, on Saturday, December 17, at Hotel Ashok in the presence of a select gathering. Justice Gopala Gowda lauded the objectives of GOPIO and urged the organization to spread the message of peace and humanism inherent in Indian culture.

Dr.Siddharth Gautam, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and a motivation speaker from the US, in his keynote address regaled the audience with stories of Indian Diaspora's success everywhere. He said the best days of India and Indians are ahead. Recalling the contributions of many professionals like Vikram Pandit, Indrani Nooyi and Fareed Zakaria, he said Indians were emerging as game-changers and agents of change. He has no doubt that tomorrow's world leaders will emerge from India.

The meeting felicitated the newly elected Executive Vice President of GOPIO, Mr. Sunny Kulathakal, and the first NRI from the Middle East to be elected to that post. All the speakers appreciated Sunny's contributions. The logo of GOPIO, Bangalore, was also unveiled on the occasion.

GOPIO-Jaipur was launched at an evening reception and meeting on Friday, December 23rd at the Conference Centre, CEG Tower, B-11G Malaviya Industrial Area in Jaipur. Attended by over former NRIs and those who have close connections with NRIs and otehrs who do business with NRIs, the meeting was addressed by GOPIO Founder President and Chairman Emeritus Dr. Thomas Abraham.

Two Principal Secretaries of Rajasthan Government Mr. R.S. Verma and Mr. O.P. Saini called on the audience to support this worthwhile cause and make a successful linkage of Jaipur to the global Indian Disapora. Both officers extended theri full support for GOPIO-Jaipur. After the speeches, an interactive session followed where several issues of interest to those NRIs who have settled back in India. A letter of intent was signed by five initial incorporators.

After the meeting, a sumptous dinner was served by CEG India Ltd and its Presdent Vishwas Jain.

GOPIO-Jaipur has also served as a launching pad for a major GOPIO International program to be held on Jan. 6th, i.e. GOPIO Conference and Community Service Awards banquet on January 6th at Marriott-Jaipur.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s social outfit, the Bharat Swabhiman Trust, has initiated a training programme for young volunteers from across the nation to campaign against ”corrupt and tainted” political leaders during the upcoming five-state Assembly polls.
Ahead of the upcoming state Assembly polls, Ramdev and his brigade of dedicated volunteers have stepped up their efforts to make good of their promise and to spread awareness and mobilise the voters on the issue of graft and black money.
Speaking to mediapersons here, Ramdev’s close aide Acharya Balkrishna revealed the plans of the Bharat Swabhiman Trust.
“We are imparting training to volunteers for campaigning in the upcoming assembly polls that are to be held in five states of the country. We want them to ensure that 100 percent voting takes place and people vote for only good, honest and clean candidates,” said Balkrishna.
Balkrishna further stressed that their exercise was not in favour of any single political party.
“We are not doing this in favour of any political party. We are doing this in favour of national interest. The Bharat Swabhiman Trust”s aim is to ensure that people elect only clean and honest candidates, for national interest,” said Balkrishna.
Ramdev shot into political scene after he went on a fast against black money and corruption in June 2011, adding to the woes of an embattled government following the nationwide agitations spearheaded by veteran social activist Anna Hazare.
However, his fast was stopped by Delhi Police, which swooped on the protesters with batons in a pre-dawn raid that triggered a fierce public and political outcry.
Following the police crackdown, Ramdev vowed to campaign against the government in the elections, indicating full support from his followers and volunteers in the ”fight against corruption.”

Trinidad PM to be honoured at Pravasi Bharati Divas

Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar will be the chief guest at the Pravasi Bharati Divas in Jaipur and will be honoured with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award.

Persad-Bissessar, who is on a 10-day official visit to the country beginning on Thursday, is accompanied by several ministers and two prominent sporting Ambassadors, cricketers Brian Lara and Darren Ganga.

During the visit, Trinidad & Tobago is expected to sign MoUs with India.

These MoUs are for cooperation and exchange in the field of culture, technical education, traditional medicine, for establishing a Ayurveda Chair in the University of West Indies, and for a bilateral air service.

This is the first state visit by a woman Head of Government of Indian origin.

Apart from her stay in Delhi, Persad-Bissessar is expected to visit Jaipur for the Pravasi Bharati Divas and will be conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, the External Affairs Ministry said in New Delhi on Thursday.

She will also be visiting her ancestral village in Buxar, Bihar besides Kolkata and Mumbai.

Trinidad & Tobago, which is part of Carribean Community (CARICOM), had supported India for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council and has also pledged support for India's effort to get a permanent seat.

"Our relations with Trinidad and Tobago are evolving in the context of the focus on strengthening India's relations with Latin America and Caribbean region. In 2010 Indias trade with the region was US$ 23 billion and cumulative investments estimated to be US$ 15 billion," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said.

The Trinidad & Tobago Prime Minister will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday.

She is also scheduled to call on President Pratibha Patil and Vice President Hamid Ansari.

Nigerian president declares state of emergencydeclared a state of emergency in 4 states on Saturday after a series of bomb attacks in the country.President Goodluck Jonathan imposed the emergency on states where radical Islamist group Boko Haram staged bombings on Christmas Day, or where the group has a stronghold.

A spokesman for Ebonyi state government said the clashes erupted between the Ezza and Ezillo people of Ishielu district, the two groups that are often in conflict, on Saturday.

Local media said that 52 people, including women and children, were killed in the resurgence of the Ezza/Ezillo inter-communal strife in Ebonyi that had reared its head in 2008 and was contained in 2010.
More than 40 people were killed by the attacks. One assault at a church in the capital Abuja killed many worshippers who came to Christmas Mass.Boko Haram claimed responsibility.Christians and Muslims have a longstanding conflict in Nigeria. The re-election of the Christian President Jonathan in April intensified frustration among some Muslims.Jonathan also ordered borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger in the northeast closed.He said the insurgents come and go across the borders to elude Nigerian authorities.Boko Haram says it is also responsible for the bombing of a building housing a UN office in August that killed more than 20 people and a series of bombings in November which resulted in more than 100 deaths.

The Session was originally scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, 21^stDecember, 2011, but the sittings of both the Houses were extended up toThursday, 29^th December, 2011 to transact essential GovernmentLegislative Business. The Session provided 24 sittings spread over a period of38 days.

During theSession, Supplementary Demands for Grants (General and Railways) for 2011-12and their related Appropriation Bills, were discussed and passed by the LokSabha. Thereafter, the Rajya Sabha considered and returned the AppropriationBills.

In LokSabha, Adjournment Motion moved on 14.12.2011 by Shri L.K. Advani, on“situation arising out of money deposited illegally in foreign banks and actionbeing taken against the guilty persons” was discussed for about 6 hours. Themotion was negatived by voice vote.

One Billreplacing the Ordinance, namely, the Cable Television Networks (Regulation)Amendment Ordinance, 2011 which was promulgated by the President, wasconsidered and passed by both the Houses of Parliament during the Session.

Inthe Lok Sabha, two Short Duration Discussions under Rule 193 were held on (i) Inflation situation in India; and (ii) Threat posed tothe very existence of river Ganga and Himalayas due to their ruthlessexploitation.

In the RajyaSabha, two Short Duration Discussions under Rule 176 were held on (i) Unprecedented rise in prices of food and other essentialcommodities; and (ii) Agrarian crisis resulting in suicide by the farmers inthe country. Besides, 3 Calling Attentions on (i)Non-revision of wages of employees of IDBI Ltd.; (ii) Adequate safety measuresto protect the life of Safai Karmacharis (Sewer Cleaner); and (iii) Spread ofEncephalitis and Brain Fever in various parts of the country, particularly inUttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar, were discussed in Lok Sabha.

During theSession, 30 Bills (27 in the Lok Sabha and 3 in the Rajya Sabha) wereintroduced. The Lok Sabha passed 18 Bills and the Rajya Sabha passed 18Bills during the session. 23^rdDecember, Kolkata: Theyoungest one in the lot, Honey Baisoya, 15, was the only one to finish his gameafter 15^th holes when he beat Ambala’s Manav Das by 5 and 3 in thequarter finals of Goodricke East India Amateur Golf Championship at the RoyalCalcutta Golf Club, Kolkata. Others who made it to the semi-finals wereBangalore duo S. Chikkarangappa and Khalin Joshi along with Chandigarh’s AngadCheema.

CurrentyNo. 3 on the junior circuit, Baisoya went one-down only once on the 6^thhole and he never looked back from there. After winning the 7^th andhalving 8^th, Baisoya made pars on the 9^thand 10^thwhile Das bogeyed both the holes for going two-down. Both the players halvedthe 11^th and an aggressive Baisoya made a par on the 12^thto go 3 up where Das made a bogey. The chances of Baisoya’s victory got muchclearer on the 13^th when he hit 2 yards on the green and doubleputted from there to go 4 up while Das missed the chip putt after going in theright rough and made a bogey. After halving the 14^th, Baisoya made abirdie on the par-5, 15^thto win the match for 5 and 4 while Das hadto close it with a par.

S.Chikkarangappa confirmed his reputation as one of the most mentally strongplayer on the amateur circuit once again as he capped a succession of win, overveteran Gagan Verma for 2 and 1. Chikka started off well with a birdie on theopening, 4^th and 6^th hole to go 3 up but Verma’s strongputting on the 9^th, 10^th and 12^th took thegame from where they started. A confident Chikka’s tee shot went 8-feet closeto the pin on the 13^th while he lost the 14^th again toget equal. Chikka then, won the 15^th and 17^th aftermaking few good up and downs to win the match.

Onlylocal lad left in the fray, S. K. Pappu (Sr.) had to face the disappointmentafter loosing the match from Khalin Joshi. Pappu, who took the advantage of his homecourse by going 2-up after 13 holes, made wrong chip and made three putts on 14^thto remain 1-up while Joshi birdied the hole. Joshi birdied the 15^thwhile Pappu missed the par putt and both became equal. Both of them fired goodbirdies on 16^th to halve the hole but under-pressured Joshi hitcenter fairway on the 17^th and made two putts from around 12 feet togo 1-up while pappu made a bogey. On the 18^th, Joshi again hit thecenter fairway for going 2-up to win the match while Pappu had given up aftergoing into the left tree.

Thewinner of last week’s RCGC Cup, Angad Cheema won a neck-to-neck match fromopponent Simarjeet Singh, who is also his playing partner at the ChandigarhGolf Club. Cheema, who was never down, won the 1^st while Singh wonthe 2^nd. Both leveled after 3^rd while Cheema made abirdie on 4^th to go 1-up. Anna to go ahead with fast; HC rejects petition Anna Hazare has made it clear that he will go ahead with his 3 day fast in Mumbai from 27th Dec at MMRDA ground for which he will organise the Rs.7 lakh rent through donations as the Bombay High Court rejected a petition seeking discounted rates for the protest venue.

"MMRDA will give some concessions and the ground hire cost will be Rs 7 lakh. The donations will be accepted only by cheque and draft. We will also keep tab on the donors," he said in Ralegan Siddhi on Friday.
Hazare said his close aides Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi will join him in his fast in Mumbai while another group of activists will go on hunger strike in Delhi in support for a strong Lokpal bill.
The court further said that it cannot come to the conclusion if the agitation was in public interest or politically motivated.
The court also said it cannot direct the government to open the gates to the enclosed area in Azad Maidan, another probable venue for the proposed 3-day fast from 27th December to allow Team Anna larger space for the protest.

"We are afraid that such issues cannot be decided by the court. This court cannot come to the conclusion as to whether this agitation is in public interest or politically motivated," a division bench of Justices P B Majmudar and Mridula Bhatkar observed on Friday while rejecting the petition filed by Jagrut Nagrik Manch, an affiliate of Hazare's India Against Corruption.
